Slowly an intellectual affair occurs between the two. As the two grow closer is that really enough? Freud’s Mistress was immediately added to my wishlist when I read about it. I really enjoy reading fictionalized stories about real life people. I have a tremendous appreciation for the amount of research it must take. Like most people I was well aware of Freud’s theories and was interested in learning more about the man himself. In the novel, Freud comes off very full of himself and rather uninterested complete fashion magazine in those around him, very egotistical. His wife, Martha seemed so overwhelmed by her life. I was fairly sympathetic to her. Freud seemed very uninterested in his wife since her world did not revolve around him. Then there is Minna.  I was a little surprised she was not more upset by Freud’s indifference to her sister. complete fashion magazine As a sister, I would be upset if I saw my brother-in-law act the way Freud did and I would like to think I wouldn’t be pulled into his world. The build-up of the relationship between Minna and Freud seemed to take awhile to get moving, so the beginning of the novel was slow. The story was written with a third person point of view, which almost exclusively centered on Minna. I really enjoyed the story and thought it was well written, but the one thing I found is occasionally the authors would suddenly center on Freud or Martha for a single sentence or paragraph and I found that slightly jarring to read. It was rarely done, but wanted to mention it. Over all I really enjoyed the novel. I would definitely recommend Freud’s Mistress, but I would say give the novel some time to develop. Once the story really complete fashion magazine got moving, I was swept away.

There is absolutely no proof, the authors write in their Note from the Authors , that Sigmund Freud ever had a love affair with Minna Bernays, his wife s sister. There are only three possible indicators that such a liaison occurred. Mack and Kaufman s novel covers the years 1895, the year that Minna came to stay with her sister and Freud, where she remained until her death 42 years later, until 1898, shortly after the alleged hotel stay in Switzerland. They base their novel about the sexual liaison on imaginative information about Bernays and Freud, Freud s writings, biographies that do not mention the affair, and studies about conditions existing at the time. Their story is interesting. The describe many of Freud s theories, such as those about sex and the Oedipus Complex, and the difficulties that Freud had because of the uniqueness of his ideas and because of anti-Semitism. They also describe the culture and conditions of the time and about many ideas that the people had in the late nineteenth century.

A friend and I were recently discussing geniuses and the fact that so many of them are intellectual snobs.  When I look at Sigmund Freud's life as illustrated in Freud's Mistress, I see a similar pattern of behaviour.  He pays little attention to Martha, his wife; nor to his children, of which he has six.  But when Martha's glamour beach sister glamour beach Minna, joins the household, Freud recognizes an individual with whom he can and does willingly discuss his theories and work.  She is not his intellectual equal, which is obvious from the way he treats her in the novel; but she seems to be far more interested glamour beach and interesting and she is near at hand.
What begins glamour beach as an intellectual affair of sorts, soon develops into something more and it is little wonder that it does.  When two people of opposite sex share so much, the next stage of the relationship can easily become much more personal.  Mack and Kaufman draw upon this likelihood, acknowledging the hotel ledger glamour beach in which the couple signed in as a married couple, and the reader is privy to what may have been the internal machinations of forbidden attraction.

In 1992, Health Press NA Inc. published an historical romance novel about the alleged relationship between Sigmund Freud and his sister-in-law, Minna Bernays. Minna s Story was written by a husband and wife team under a pseudonym, based on his research and travels through Germany and the surrounding geographic areas frequented by Freud and his companions. The book received very good reviews from literary sources, and one scathing review from a psychoanalytical group as libel. Now, twenty-one years later, a new historical novel has just been released: Freud s Mistress . This new book written glenda bailey by Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman is receiving national attention.

Freud’s rival, Carl Jung, was the first to intimate that Freud had had an affair with his wife’s sister, Minna Bernays. Jung claimed that Minna gave him this information directly and people were quick to dismiss it, claiming that Jung had ulterior motives. Fast forward to 2006. A Swiss hotel register from 1898 was discovered signed by Freud and a guest that was not his wife. Suddenly the ‘rumor’ of an affair became a possibility and Freud’s Mistress by Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman is a recreation of this supposed love affair.
Freud’s Mistress is told from the perspective of Minna Bernays, sister to Martha, Sigmund Freud’s wife. Minna has been employed as a governess or ladies companion. When she loses her job, she goes to stay with her sister Martha, her husband and their seven children. To prevent being a financial burden to the Freud’s, Minna assumes the daily care of six of the Freud children, as her Martha recovers from childbirth. It is during this time that Minna, who is the more intellectual of the sisters, becomes close to Sigmund. He appears to respect and value her opinions and treats Minna completely differently than his wife, whom he treats like a servant. Minna quickly becomes enamored with Sigmund on more than one level, so it’s easy to see how an affair could start.
These are the only facts that are known about Minna. It is true that in the late 19th century, women did not have many choices in life. Minna’s options were limited. She could either marry or become a ladies companion or a governess. exploring business karen collins Freud is also know to have been quite the magnetic charmer, so the reader can see how Minna could be charmed by him. Mack and Kaufman state that there is no solid proof Minna and Sigmund had a sexual relationship, but it was rumored during their lives and in 2006 proof was found that they had stayed at a Swiss hotel for several days as husband and wife.
In some ways, I found the story wonderful. exploring business karen collins The authors evoked fin-de-siecle Vienna in sights, sounds, smells and flavors; reading the book is an immersive experience. You could feel Minna’s confusion as she lives with the Freud’s struggling with the right thing to do. With that said, the book does drag in places. I don’t doubt that an affair with her sister’s husband is something Minna would agonize over but at times Mack and Kaufman got caught up in that. I loved the ending but all in all felt Freud’s Mistress could have been a little shorter.
