You regularly receive spam predatory journals, and often it is easy to see that it is a scam. Less often, these emails come from scientific magazines. But some pharmacies are becoming more professional. Here is an example of an email anonymized and reproduced in full below, and I struggled to get an idea: This request is documented, well written, adapted to the target author ... it is no no spam that require you to write on diseases of lions in Africa, or a subject you do not know ... good style of solicitation; with reference to the former director of Inserm, for example; This request is honorary, as usual, and evokes a magazine that impressive presentation and can be downloaded free of charge; but the whole production seems to be only 2014 (not clear); magazines seem well made, and you can read them online; items look good: I looked quickly; The publisher is not in India but in Bristol, UK, and the website is well done with logos WHO, INSERM, etc .. (probably some are pirated?) no information on the resources of this publishing house that is free magazines: surprising; managers names on the bear magazines; Demand is totatelement evasive on the economic conditions of the deal, which is suspect; but demand evokes the Creative Commons CC-BY license: bravo, well done; This is Jeffrey Beall who studied this house better than me: email addresses were stolen in PLOS group (and probably others), so the targeting of authors is best done as ahbitude; beauty in style they use commentairs left in PLOS Medicine and adapt the email according to the subject; applications do not mention the $ 3,000 that must then pay authors for publication; when the author beauty in style worked, written, reviewed the events, it is easier to ask him to pay .. and some pay.

2900 or 3000 USD, it's still absurd, if it is, roughly, to edit a pdf (LaTeX does, and it's free ...). It is, say, a month's salary for a specialist. However, it should not be a month of full-time work to edit AN article. The case of PLoS may be, I do not know, but for many publishers, ask such prices for articles in open-access, knowing very well that (almost) beauty in style nobody really reads them, is the assurance of having big disappointments. An article, beauty in style basically, it's like a Vuitton beauty in style bag, why pay a fortune if we can have the same ten times less? Even a fake Vuitton bag works very well as: certainly it is not a Vuitton, but it's a bag. My reasoning is perhaps a bit farfetched, but basically beauty in style PLoS is a bit Vuitton scientific literature.
